On 3 April 2025 GeDy TrAss was the guest of the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Physics Department of New York City College of Technology (City Tech), part of the City University of New York (CUNY). Carlo Rosso, professor at Politecnico di Torino and co-founder of GeDy TrAss, and Andrea Re of digitare.net gave the talk “From Bit to Bulk” in person, in room 801N.
The talk was a concrete case of technology transfer: semi-analytical methods for the design and analysis of geared transmissions, born in university research as MATLAB software, have become a Software as a Service platform that engineers use from the browser, on mobile devices too, without losing performance or features.
Rosso and Re presented the core functions of GeDy TrAss, from static and dynamic analysis to linear and non-linear finite element simulations, rotordynamics and NVH, and the steps of the move to the web: assessment of the existing architecture, choice of the web technologies, redevelopment of the functions on cloud infrastructure, optimisation of the compute-intensive tasks and a user interface designed for engineers and designers.
The talk was addressed to students, professors and professionals in mechanical engineering, to show how knowledge generated by research can reach industry and the market.
During the same visit City Tech students designed and 3D printed the gearbox of an e-bike with GeDy TrAss: read the project.
